Amazon named Bessmer, AL its next distribution location.

Written By Lindsay Davis

In early May 2018, rumors began of a possible 800,000-square-foot fulfillment center that could employ up to 3,000 people. Project Bluebird was the name given the secretive project being courted for Bessemer, Alabama.  Local, state, and national news outlets were speculating about the project. The Birmingham Business Bureau broke the good news to the media by mid-May. Now we all know it is - Amazon.  Birmingham began wooing Amazon last year for the Amazon HQ2 headquarters with their “Bring A to B” campaign. Birmingham wasn’t chosen then but the unusual campaign caused Amazon to give Birmingham Metro another look.

The proposed location for the fulfillment center is off of the Academy Drive exit, I-59 in Bessemer. It is on 133 acres owned by U. S. Steel near Powder Plant Road. The land is also close to Bessemer High School and Splash Park.

To sweeten the deal, the Jefferson County Commission is considering incentives that would improve the roads and possible reimbursement for capital investments.  The city of Bessemer is considering reimbursements for capital investments and linking the amount to the number of full-time employees. Bessemer is offering to handle recruiting and training plus add a transit stop for the area. Even the state of Alabama is considering incentives to present. Those have not been announced.

Meetings are scheduled in early June to work out the details of the incentives to be offered. The city of Bessemer will meet the first week in June and the Jefferson County Commission the following week. According to Jefferson County Commissioner David Carrington, Amazon could be operational by fall 2019.

The Amazon Fulfillment Center will be a boon for Bessemer and Jefferson County. Amazon is already selling a Bessemer T-shirt. Maybe that is a good sign.
